AAKAAR
Early Intervention School Readiness Programme
Aakaar is a comprehensive early intervention programme for children with Autism Spectrum Conditions up to seven years. The programme is child centric, play based and family focused. The primary aim of the programme is to help the child ‘learn to learn’ by working on various school readiness skills and prepare the child for a successful inclusion in the mainstream classroom.
Aakaar runs twice a year, beginning in January and July of each year. Each session has a group of six children who train together with their mothers (or parent primarily involved in the child’s education) throughout the duration of the programme. The programme runs from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm through Mondays to Fridays.
Aakaar aims at helping the mother understand the unique learning styles of the child with autism. This enables the mother to teach the child new skills and help him/her generalize learnt skills in the environment using the most appropriate teaching strategies. It also empowers her to provide the necessary support that the child would require in a mainstream class.
